Blog for Week 10...
This will be the final original blog for the class, however, I will post again next week as a reminder to finish outstanding blogs and to list again the deliverables for the final projects.
This week's blog topic (wide variety- choose 1 through 4 or more if you like):
(1) Do some research on projections and patterns in light. You will have the most luck obviously in performance lighting, but also look for architectural lighting's use of projections. (2) You can and should also look for designers and professionals who have used or are known for addressing patterns and projections and similar techniques in their lighting. (3) Designers who have worked in both the theatrical lighting and architectural lighting professions. (4) Lighting Designers who are specifically addressing sustainable or Universal design principles.
A few examples of designers (in no particular order) you are welcome to bring to the blog are Josef Svoboda, Abhay Wadhwa, Stefan Graf and Naomi Miller.
HOW CAN YOU TIE PROJECTIONS AND LIGHTING TO THE BAUHAUS? WHAT ABOUT BAUHAUS DESIGNERS WHO MIGHT HAVE USED LIGHT?
Please everyone come back to the blog and respond to each others posts throuhout the week.
Off you go.
Thanks,
~T

Blog for Week 9...
For this Week's Blog, I am not going to post a specific assignment. I want you that have not done so, to go back to last week's (WK8) and do that. For everyone else, I want each of you to find a different topic on lighting that you find interesting from online or hard copy periodicals. Present these as if doing a book report on the blog.
Remember to look at last week's posting for Week 9 deliverables.
Off you go.
Thanks, Tim

Blog for Week 8 (even though next Monday is Labor Day)
1) Blog for Week 8 (Even though class does not meet):
Theater of the Bauhaus. From your reading that is in the drop off, pick out the salient points that you found and post them to blog for everyone in class to discuss. Try to tie the reading into our projects.
2) Island Getaway (ID1605). As with the U-theatre this week, on Week 9 we will post the Island Getaway as a work in progress. Follow your deliverables list from last week’s blog.
3) Mid term programming for Island Getaway (everyone does this). Remember to e-mail me your completed programming by 1PM of Week 8, as class does not meet due to Labor Day. Todonnell@aii.edu or venicetim@yahoo.com
4) By Week 9 the lobby plans and section for the U-theatre should be complete along with your lighting fixture choices. MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE AN RCP FOR THE LIGHTING.
5) For Week 9 we will pin up the work in process of the last step in the U-theatre projects:
Seating and acoustics (looking at in procress along with Island Getaway).
Here are the deliverables:
A) Using the research that the class did in earlier blogs choose specific seating and acoustical treatments for the U-theatre.
B) Layout seating as you like in plan or whatever detail, make sure you know what your total count is and that they fit the space. You will need seating dimensions spacing, etc. You don’t have to draw every seat, but the information needs to be clear and accessible (The “silver bible” Time Saver Standards is a good resource).
C) Address the acoustical treatment of your space. Make choices based on the previous research (and more if needed) done on the blog. Find a way to represent your choices in your project drawings.
NOTE: There will be another blog that I will post during Week 8
FOR WEEK 11:
• Burn copies of your assignments to CD for me to keep (scan non-digital work).
• Turn in hard copies of your assignments on 11” x 17” paper
(DO NOT STAPLE). Copies only as these will go into permanent files and will not be returned to you.
Off you go.
Thanks,
~Tim

Blog for Week 6 and class info...
1. Blog Subject for Week 6: Residential and Commercial Lighting Design Systems
As usual research these system and compare your findings in the blog. Please share websites that you find on the blog to continue the concept of collaborative design.
Please remember to visit the blog multiple times throughout the week to respond to your classmates’ and my comments.
2. The reading assignments for Week 6 are:
A. The Theater of the Bauhaus
(the pages of this text as you know, are on your drop off).
B. Chapters 11 and 12 in Winchip’s Fundamentals of Lighting
3. Those of you in ID 1605, who are having trouble with your lighting fixture design assignment, put this project on hold. As discussed with some of you, we will meet at 12Noon before class next Monday to get the projects for both classes on track. Anyone taking ID 1605 and 1608 simultaneously is encouraged to attend this session.
4. Everyone should have decided on what type of client they are representing in their Island Getaway projects. Come to class prepared to use the information gleaned from chapters 11 and 12 to create the needed programming for this house. ID 1605 will fully realize the programming in relation to their final lighting design, ID 1608 will be only concentrating on the programming phase as research. We will continue our assignment of role-playing groups that we started on Week 2 to create this material. Remember that this exercise constitutes your midterm and we will work on it in class Week 6 and 7 with its final outcome turned in on Week 8.
5. Everyone should have a floor plan of the U-Theater drawn up by Week 6 with their own interpretation of a lobby space (which does not exist on your supplied template). You will need this to be able to create your RCP and Lighting floor plans for commercial lighting fixtures you will want to use in your public spaces. We will discuss choosing lighting fixtures in class next week.
6. There will be studio time in class to work on your projects and I will take this time to meet with groups and individuals on any of their class needs.
Feel free to e-mail me for clarification of any of the above:
todonnell@aii.edu
Off you go.

Blog #1 for Week 2....
Welcome to your first blog. During the first day of class, I will not be in attendance and David Jones will be the substitute. David will guide the class through a "light logic" exercise and will show some videos about interior lighting design.
David will not go over the syllabus with you, I will do that on week 2.
David will mention that your text is by Susan Winchip: Fundamentals of Lighting. YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK. They have it in the bookstore.
Now for the Blog: Write about your experiences in class on day one about the light logic exercise and the key information you learned from the videos. THESE WEEKLY BLOGS ARE WORTH 20% OF YOUR OVERALL GRADE. Please visit the blog more than once during the week and respond to each other's comments. Feel free to explore either subject further on the internet and in the library to "beef up" your blogs. If someone beats you to the punch and makes comments that you wanted to post, please do not just agree and move on. Find something new to add to the discussion.
I will see you all week two, I look forward to meeting those of you who have not had class with me before.
